BASIC
INTRODUCTION TO THE INDUCTION MACHINE
What is induction heating?
Induction heating is a
method by which electrically conducting materials (generally
metals), are heated by a non-contact method in an alternating
magnetic field.
Induction Heating
Systems are portable power supply units that generate alternating
magnetic flux fields in conductive metals to achieve rapid heating
of components in the field. This process affords enormous
timesavings when compared to other methods, such as electrical
resistance heaters and acetylene torches.
The unit is controlled
remotely, so the operator can stand adjacent to the work piece and
operate the heating process while monitoring the changing thermal
characteristics.
Induction Heating
System is packaged in a small self-contained cart that can be
rolled up next to a steam or gas turbine. The system inductively
heats studs and bolts for rapid assembly and disassembly of the
horizontal joint, stop valves and control valves.
Benefits
of Induction Heating:
Reduces time required
for thermal bolt elongation from 45 minutes per bolt using
resistance heaters, to just minutes and in some cases seconds with
the our Induction
Heating System
Eliminates days and
weeks from critical path outage schedules enabling units to be put
back on line faster to generate revenue.
Utilization of low
voltage and high frequencies creates a safer work environment.
Induction coils are cool to the touch immediately after heating of
the components, Coils can be designed for numerous applications:
Heating is accomplished
with replaceable induction coils in a variety of shapes and sizes.
They are connected to transmission leads of varying lengths with
quick disconnects for rapid replacement.
What are the most common applications for induction
heating?
l
Heat treatment of metals -
hardening, tempering, and annealing.
l
Heating prior to deformation -
forging, swaging, upsetting, bending, and piercing.
l
Brazing and soldering -
brazing of steel, brass, and copper to each other in combination
and aluminum to aluminum.
l
Shrink fitting - In any
manufacturing process, for example, shrinkfitting of motor rotors
to shafts, shrink fitting of shell casings for compressors.
l
Coating - Of dissimilar
metals, prior to insulation, and curing, such as paint.
l
Melting - Of all types of
metals.
l
Other applications include
crystal growing, cap sealing, sintering, carbon vapor deposition,
levitation, exit axial deposition, and plasma generation.
l
Steam & Gas Turbine
Bolting ( removal by thermal expansion)
l
Boiler Feed Pump Heads ( By
localized heating)
l
Inn House Heating Treating
& Welding Applications
Basically
how does induction-heating work?
Induction heating occurs when an electrically conducting
object (generally metal) is placed in a varying electric magnetic
field. Induction heating occurs due to the magnetic quality and
resistively of the material. The magnetic qualities are only
present in magnetic steel. The varying electric magnetic field
induces a current inside the component being heated in a similar
way to that of a transformer.
What makes induction heating different from other methods
of heating such as resistance or conduction?
Induction heating is a non-contact method.
The heat is generated only in the part, not in the surrounding
area except by radiation. The location of the heating can
be defined to a specified area on the metal component and achieves
accurate and consistent results. As heating occurs in the object
itself, induction heating is considered more efficient than
alternative methods.
What
does an induction heating system comprise of?
An induction heating system comprises a basic induction
power source which provides the required power output at the
required power frequency, complete with matching components, an
induction coil assembly, a method of material handling, and some
method of water cooling. Most induction heating systems are
water-cooled
The
methods of material handling and the induction coil arrangement
are dependent entirely upon the application. WV Group CO., LTD
With its in depth knowledge of Industrial Material handling
systems can suggest a suitable systems , The choice of induction
power source is related to the application requirements and to
production rate.
